On St. Valentine’s Day, minds and hearts will turn toward loved ones. All that love also creates data and e-commerce and retail store revenue. In the UK, Finder.com reports that £1.37 billion was spent on Valentine’s Day in 2022. Author Reemul Balla reckoned that 76 percent of Brits (40 million) celebrated the occasion. Over in the US, the National Retail Federation, described as the world’s largest retail trade association, has an annual survey done by Prosper Insights & Analytics.

Connected car’s direction — mission-critical or infotainment?

Over the years, automotive vehicles have become increasingly connected, and so connectivity will increasingly underpin the future of the industry.

At least that’s the view that was discussed by Steve Bell, chief analyst – connectivity, Informa Tech Automotive Group at September’s WardsAuto Intelligence Outlook Conference at The Townsend Hotel, Birmingham, Michigan. It also suggests that there is an evolution in vehicle architecture, and a transition to software-defined vehicles that will depend on connectivity to ensure they are up-to-data and cyber-secure. The executive summary of his presentation adds: “The rapid evolution of BEVs means the traditional vehicle business model of profit on initial sales is being replaced by lifetime earnings that rely on over-the-air (OTA) upgrades to enhance the vehicle value to consumers.”

Diffusing the Connected Car’s Ticking Data Privacy Timebomb

Connected and autonomous vehicles (CAVs) collate a significant amount of data to ensure vehicle safety, requiring an always-on internet connection and hundreds of sensors.

An entire industry has been developed around monitoring, logging, analyzing and monetizing it. Yet, the danger is, particularly with increasing cyber-attacks, that this data could end up being leaked and stolen.

With safety being paramount, and with the threat that hackers could take over a connected and autonomous vehicle, there is increasingly a need to ensure that smart car data leakages. Cassandra Moons, data protection officer at TomTom explains why CAVs are a ticking data privacy timebomb by first of all suggesting that connectivity in cars has evolved in ways that reflect how people live their lives today. So, not long ago the idea of always being connected was just a prediction of the future but nowadays being “always-on” is an increasing reality for many people. It’s becoming the norm.

V2X Reducing the Cyber-Security Risks

The future of connected and autonomous vehicles (CAVs) depends on a number of factors, and one of the most vital ones is cyber-security.

Protecting the vehicles, the highways and the infrastructure that support them is now seen as one of the key elements to accelerating the technologies. One emerging technology that will inevitably have an impact on vehicle-to-everything (V2X) communications is cellular-vehicle-to-everything (C2X), which the GSMA explains is “designed to connect vehicles to each other, to roadside infrastructure, to other road-users and to cloud-based services”. The aim is to enable intelligent transport, which also needs be secured.

Lessons Drawn from Mercedes-Benz CAV Software Bug Issues

In 2019, Mercedes-Benz revealed that it had patched security issues found in its vehicles.

A report reveals that Sky-Go’s researchers had found 19 vulnerabilities in a Mercedes E-Class car. The findings raise the concern that the cyber-security for connected and autonomous vehicles (CAVs) is not being taken seriously enough. Jia Jen Low, writing for TechHQ in her 12th August 2020 article, Mercedes-Benz security bug — a sign of connected vehicle security issues? comments: “Last year, Mercedes announced that it had patched security issues found in its vehicles, and a recently-published report revealed researchers had found 19 vulnerabilities in a Mercedes E-Class car. A team of security researchers at the Sky-Go Team detailed the way they were able to form an attack chain and remotely take control of the vehicle.”

Witch WAN Solution Mitigates The Fright Of Latency and Packet Loss?

For example, when disasters – manmade or natural – occur, organisations need to have the ability to back up and restore data rapidly. Digital transformation strategies: Should shaken SD-WAN confidence lead to WAN acceleration?

Before the COVID-19 pandemic and lockdown struck, the predictions for software-defined wide area networks (SD-WANs) were glowingly positive. A Cato Networks IT survey forecasted strong growth for the technology, as buyers want to replace their multiprotocol label switching (MPLS) with a nimbler and more affordable alternative.
